In January the Riot Act delivered an engaging, contemporary road safety education PSHE session to the Year 12s using theatre.<\/p>\n

There were many standout statistics from the presentation, but the fact that young car drivers aged 17 to 24 make up only 6% of total license holders, yet they are involved in 24% of all fatal and serious collisions is a serious cause for concern.<\/p>\n

Another statistic worthy of attention was the fact that no less than one in five newly qualified drivers will have an accident within their first year of driving.<\/p>\n

I will leave the bulk of the account to a Year 12 student who attended the PSHE session, namely Palak:<\/p>\n

\u2018Wednesday’s PSHE session on road safety was incredibly eye-opening, especially thanks to the immersive performance by The Riot Act. They used three powerful scenarios to illustrate the hidden dangers of being on the road. In the Passenger section, I realised how much my behaviour affects the driver and why it is vital to avoid distractions to keep everyone safe. The Speak Up scenario was particularly practical; it taught me that you don’t have to be confrontational to be firm, offering clever ways to tell a driver to slow down or put their phone away. Finally, the third section provided a fascinating look at how drugs and alcohol impair the part of our brain responsible for decision-making and response times. Seeing these situations acted out made the advice feel much more real and gave me the confidence to prioritize safety in the future.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n

Another positive comment to come from a Year 12 included:<\/p>\n

\u2018The road safety PSHE session was not only humorous but informative. I believe I learnt a lot that day and I can apply it towards my future driving.\u2019 VP<\/em><\/p>\n

Many thanks to the Riot Act for their PSHE session. Hopefully although presented in a fun, interactive manner the lessons will be heeded by our Year 12s.<\/p>\n
