Darren Couchman – a force of nature and a natural communicator to boot gave an informative and entertaining PSHE session in October to the Year 12s on the risks of both testicular and ovarian cancer on his yearly return to Beal.
As a survivor of testicular cancer 23 years himself he is well aware of the risks of testicular cancer, a cancer which is actually the most common cancer in men aged 15-45 but a cancer which is 95% curable if detected early enough.
While ovarian cancer is more common in older women, it can affect younger individuals as well. The Year 12s were made aware of its symptoms, such as bloating, pelvic pain, and changes in bathroom habits. Early awareness can lead to earlier detection, which can improve outcomes.
Thank you to Darren for staying after the PSHE talk to take questions from the students and to also hand out free information about the best ways to avoid these cancers.
Darren was complimentary about the school ‘Beal Sixth Form is always a pleasure to visit’,
with the two quotes below from Year 12s showing that the respect was reciprocated.
‘Today’s assembly was extremely humorous and informative. It was nice seeing how something so serious as cancer can be turned into an informative, fun assembly.’ VP
‘…funny and engaging’ AK
