Twenty extremely keen Year 12 students visited the iconic Lloyd’s Building (an ‘inside out’ building designed by Richard Rogers to provide the perfect working environment for its clients) for an Insurance Insights Day held in conjunction with Future First.
Students first met in The Old Library for an initial talk and then split into groups where a host of volunteers from the insurance industry engaged with the groups covering various aspects of the insurance industry within London. The volunteers strongly encouraged active participation from the Year 12s.
There was then a Lloyd’s “Dive-in” careers conference on the famous Lloyd’s of London main underwriting floor. Here the attendees mingled with various underwriting and broking firms to learn about the types of business traded and met individuals from those very firms who explained various career paths to the Year 12s.
There were also tables with market supporting firms, including consultancy, compliance and legal areas, where attendees were able to find out about additional career paths that interlink with the insurance industry.
The students were made more than aware if they weren’t already that a career in insurance offers excellent career opportunities in the financial sector. Students concluded that although insurance can offer an extremely rewarding career it is at times perhaps unfairly overlooked in favour of the ‘bright lights’ of investment banking.
A career in insurance, perhaps via an apprenticeship may well be an option that several of those on trip as well as others in Year 12 at Beal now choose to pursue with the quotes below showing how much the students valued the trip.
A thank you to all the students for their exemplary behaviour and a thanks as well to Ms. Mascia for helping to organise the trip.
Mr. Matheson October 2025
‘I really enjoyed the Lloyds Insight Day as it allowed to me get an insight on Insurance and Marketing. Everyone including the volunteers were helpful as well. If there are any other opportunities like this, I would be more than pleased to come.’ AP
‘From the Lloyds and LIIBA insight day, I found it very informing to learn about the insurance world directly from the professionals. Hearing from so many different companies about their experiences gave me a much broader understanding of the sector than I had before. KD
I found the talks about post-18 options particularly helpful. I particularly found good the insights into potential career paths and the different routes available, like apprenticeships and university advice.’ BP
‘Thank you for…inspiring trip to Lloyds.’ RR
‘Thrilling and inspiring experience, very grateful to have participated.’ HM
‘Thank you for such an amazing opportunity to look into the world of insurance. It has really helped me look into a subsection of finance as well as the legal aspect of it.
I really enjoyed the insight from the variable mentors and there real-world experiences and would love to attend many more of these insight days and experiences to get a better grasp of what I would look to do in the future.’ AB
‘The Lloyds trip was an incredible experience — it was both inspiring and insightful, providing me with a deeper understanding of the industry and valuable lessons that I will carry forward in my professional journey.’ VP
‘It was a massive pleasure participating in the Lloyd’s insurance trip. I learned valuable information from experience individuals and I hope there are many more opportunities to come.’ IA‘
A morning of impact and engagement
60 students from years 9, 10 and 11 gathered in the new Maths school block to take part in interactive sessions focused on spotting misinformation, understanding online influence, and building positive digital communities. The energy in the ‘Hawkins’ room was electric as students engaged with trainers, asked insightful questions, and collaborated on activities designed to sharpen their critical thinking and media literacy. Local MP Wes Streeting then spoke to the students about how misinformation online can be a threat to our local and national democracy, and the importance of checking sources and establishing objective truth.
Capturing the moment
The event was not only educational but also a celebration of youth voice and leadership. Several students were photographed alongside the presenting team, and parts of the workshop were filmed to showcase the enthusiasm and engagement of Beal’s young digital citizens. These moments will be shared by ParentZone and YouTube to highlight the importance of empowering young people in today’s online landscape. Some students also delivered presentations capturing what they have learned, from powerful speeches to poetry and illustration.
A proud milestone for Beal
Mr MacLeod, Head of School – KS3, expressed his pride in the students’ participation:
“It was fantastic to see our students so engaged in discussions about digital responsibility. Events like this are vital in preparing them to be thoughtful, informed citizens in an increasingly complex online world.”
Next up for the students involved is to lead a series of whole school assemblies to raise awareness of safety online so all students at the school benefit from the visit. Well done to all of the year 9, 10 and 11students involved and thanks to staff too for supporting the event.
