King’s College London Extracurricular Science Lecture

Dr Richard Heads, a Senior Lecturer in the School of Cardiovascular Medicine & Sciences at King’s College London led a talk to a group of 40 Sixth Form students. He delivered a sample lecture to students about an area of his research as well as gave an overview of his own academic and career journey. He talked about science at King’s, what types of courses are available with a focus on interdisciplinary science, and what that means in terms of research and studying at King’s. He also talked to students about the new Natural Sciences programme which was highly engaging. Here is what some of our students had to say:

“I thought the talk brought a different approach to where science related subjects can take you, with real life examples implemented to establish that science degrees in fact have more to offer than the typical Medicine routes. I felt the lecture-type style provided almost a taster into what studying at King’s College can offer, as well as including its rich history and advanced resources on offer to make students feel further compelled to apply within the degrees discussed. Overall, I enjoyed the talk and look forward to applying to King’s next year.” – Myleesha Khaliq – 12IM

“The lecture by Dr Richard Heads introduced us to the Natural Sciences degree at KCL, a breath of fresh air from the typical science degrees we think of, like Engineering or Pure Science degrees. A key takeaway was the focus on interdisciplinarity: combining skills and knowledge from across the natural sciences (Computer science, Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Physics). The course makes it a priority to push for employability, with training in entrepreneurship and core coding skills, suitable for those that wish to get more out a degree. For anyone who seeks to study Biology but couldn’t find the pure form at KCL, Natural sciences is a great alternative. Dr Richard Heads himself being a Senior lecturer for the School of Cardiovascular Medicine and Science, with vast experience in Biology and a keen interest in Marine Biology.” – Saif Chaudhry Shaheen – 12HL.
