English is about helping students towards a critical understanding of their cultural environment, through engaging with the best that has been thought and written. It is about understanding the processes by which meanings are conveyed, and in which texts carry values. The focus is on empowerment through understanding of increasingly challenging texts. Students are taught to understand literary periods and movements, to appreciate the relationship between texts and their historical context, and to engage with the process of intertextuality that forms the discipline of English at KS3, GCSE, A-level and beyond.
