PSHE session on an alumna’s journey from Beal to the Bar

Alumna Anjali Narbheram, now a commercial barrister came into Beal to speak to the Year 12s to convince them that they should aim high in terms of a potential career and outlined her own story of becoming a commercial barrister. Anjali noted that throughout her journey to become a barrister she was continually warned not to pursue this potential career.

Anjali outlined how aiming to be a commercial barrister is extremely competitive and is not without its drawbacks. The job can be isolating, commercial barristers usually working independently. Also at times there will be limited work-life balance particularly when barristers have big trials.

However, there would appear to be far more benefits of becoming a commercial barrister including exciting, varied work, the freedom to specialise according to your interests and the perk of being able to holiday whenever you want to. And of course, being a barrister offers excellent remuneration with pupillage generally in excess of £60k immediately after graduation.

Anjali then outlined how to become a barrister including both which degree to study and what to do whilst studying for a degree.

The feedback from students was very positive and hopefully Anjali’s journey from Beal to the Bar can motivate other Beal students to aim for one of the very best careers, be that as a commercial barrister or in another esteemed occupation.

Thank you very much to Anjali for taking the time to come back to Beal.

Mr. Matheson – October 2025
