‘Murderous Maths’ with Year 8s

Beal High School was delighted to welcome the AS Creatives team on Monday 8th June 2026 for a full day of highenergy, interactive Murderous Maths workshops with all of our Year 8 students. The sessions blended humour, storytelling and handson problemsolving to help students explore key mathematical ideas in a memorable and engaging way.

Throughout the day, students worked through a rich variety of mathematical themes appropriate to their age and stage, including:

  • Positional language – understanding direction, movement and spatial relationships
  • Properties of 2D and 3D shapes – identifying, comparing and reasoning about geometric structures
  • Additive and multiplicative reasoning – exploring how numbers combine, scale and relate
  • Fractions – deepening confidence with part–whole relationships
  • Number patterns – spotting structure, sequences and rules
  • Time – applying time calculations to realworld contexts
  • Multistage problem solving – breaking down complex tasks into logical steps
  • Money – reasoning with value, budgeting and financial decisions
  • Data collection – gathering, organising and interpreting information

The AS Creatives team brought these ideas to life through puzzles, demonstrations and challenges that encouraged students to think creatively and collaboratively. Year 8 engaged brilliantly, showing curiosity, resilience and enthusiasm as they tackled each activity.

The day not only strengthened students’ mathematical understanding but also highlighted the fun, relevance and excitement of the subject both in and out of the curriculum. We look forward to welcoming AS Creatives back to Beal High School in the future.
