Year 12 students recently presented the culmination of months of research as part of the inaugural Beal Extended Maths Project.
Since November, students have worked collaboratively to investigate an area of mathematics that interested them, producing both an academic poster and a presentation before sharing their findings with the rest of the Year 12 Further Mathematics cohort. The project encouraged students to explore mathematics beyond the A Level specification through independent research and clear academic communication.
This year’s topics reflected the breadth and creativity of mathematics, with projects including The Mathematics Behind Luck, an investigation into whether spending more money in football leads to greater success, prime number theorems, and the structure and stability of triangles.
Following each presentation, students answered questions from the audience, demonstrating both their understanding of the mathematics and their ability to communicate challenging ideas with confidence.
The Beal Extended Maths Project has provided students with an opportunity to develop valuable academic and professional skills, including independent research, presentation, teamwork, and responding thoughtfully to questions—skills that will serve them well in higher education and future careers.
